Question: Domain Name Expiration Process
This question relates to category Domain Names
Answer:
What is the process to register a domain name which is about to expire?
Sometimes the domain name you want is already registered by someone else. If you keep an eye out on that domain, sometimes you get lucky because the original owner will lose interest in it and not renew the domain, thereby making it available to be registered again.
The question we often get asked is, what is the process for registering a domain name that will soon expired.
Historically when a domain name was no longer required by a client, the client simply lets the domain expire. And once a domain name expires, it got released immediately back into the pool of available domains.
These days however, the process is a little more complex. Essentially the new process protects the original domain owner in case there was an administrative oversight, or the client might not have received the relevant renewal notices.
If you are interested in registering an expired domain, it's important to understand the details of the expiration process in order to give yourself a better chance of snatching an expired domain.
The process differs somewhat between an 'Australian' domain name (eg, .com.au, .net.au, etc) and a 'global' domain name (.com, .net, .org, etc).
