Question: Proper Use of Meta-Tags & Page Title
This question relates to category Internet Marketing
Answer:
Meta-tags are hidden fields in website coding which instruct search engines how to index your site. Metatags are no-longer as important as they once were due to past abuses of this system. But when used properly, they are important in reinforcing your keywords. Often the meta-description is also used by search engines to contextualise your search engine results.
Page Title
The Title tag should be concise, contain only a couple of the main keywords for your page, and be no longer than 6 - 8 words.
Description Metatag
The description metatag should be unique to the page, describe the main subject of your page, contain the same keywords as in your title, and contain no more than 24 words.
Keywords Metatag
The keywords metatag should list all the keywords related to the web page it is attached to. Keywords should be listed roughly in order of importance, separated by a comma, contain no spaces, and contain no more than 48 words.
Additional tips:
- Try not to repeat words in metatags as this is seen as spamming and can cause a search engine to ignore these words.
- Keep the order of your Title, Description and Keywords as per above for maximum effectiveness.
- Don't add keywords in your meta-tags that are not in the body of your webpage. It doesn't help search engines index your site properly, doesn't help your visitors, and it doesn't help your website ranking
